Go to ToolGregorian to Hijri Converter: Mapping Your Life to the Islamic Calendar
Easily transform Western dates into their Islamic equivalents. Perfect for tracking religious milestones, historical research, or planning your next trip to the Middle East.
We live in a world governed by the sun, using the Gregorian calendar to schedule our work, meetings, and holidays. But for over 1.9 billion people, there is another rhythm—one governed by the moon. If you’ve ever wondered what your birthday is in the Islamic calendar, or if you're trying to figure out when a specific historical event happened in "AH" (Anno Hegirae), you’ve come to the right place.
Our Gregorian to Hijri Converter is designed to be your primary tool for navigating these two distinct timelines. By using the Islamic Civil (Tabular) system, we provide a mathematically stable conversion that bridges the gap between solar years and lunar cycles. In this guide, we’ll explore how these two calendars differ and how you can use our tool to stay synchronized with both.
Quick Guide: How to Use the Converter
We’ve built this dashboard to feel more like a modern app than a boring website. You don’t need to click "calculate" every time; the results update the moment you pick a date.
- Pick a Date: Click on the date field in the blue "Western Date" section. You can select any date from the past, present, or future.
- Check the Results: The right panel instantly displays the Hijri Date in a clear, easy-to-read format.
- Explore Extra Formats: Look at the stats cards below to see the numerical format, the day of the week, and even the Julian Day number.
- Swap if Needed: If you realize you need to go the other way (Hijri to Gregorian), just click the yellow "Swap" button in the center.
Sun vs. Moon: Why the Calendars Don't Match
The main reason we need an online date converter is that these two calendars measure time using different celestial bodies.
The Western (Solar) Method
The Gregorian calendar follows the Earth’s 365.25-day trip around the sun. To keep the seasons in the same months, we add a "Leap Day" every four years. It is predictable and remains static relative to the seasons.
The Islamic (Lunar) Method
The Hijri calendar is purely lunar, following the phases of the moon. A lunar year is roughly 354 or 355 days. Because it is about 11 days shorter than the solar year, Islamic months like Ramadan or Shawwal rotate through all the seasons over a 33-year cycle. This is why you might experience Ramadan in the heat of summer one decade and the cold of winter the next.
How the Tabular System Works
In daily life, many Islamic observances depend on the sighting of the new crescent moon. However, moon sighting can be affected by weather or location. For computers and historical records, we use the Islamic Civil (Tabular) Calendar.
This is an arithmetic-based system that follows a 30-year cycle. During these 30 years, 11 "Leap Years" occur where a day is added to the last month (Dhu al-Hijjah). This ensures the calendar stays perfectly aligned with the moon's average phases over long periods. Our tool uses this exact math to give you a consistent, reliable result for any date in history.
